Awake!

23 Aug 2008 In: Uncategorized

Okay, I’m up. I’m up.

Last evening, I participated in an impromptu going away celebration with my neighbors in front of my building. This morning, I’m still feeling the fun… So much so, that my 8AM appointment with Ashley at Moxie turned into a 8:15 appointment… Right after she called and woke my ass up. But I digress.

I’m in my condo right now, looking around at all the tasks I failed to accomplish before today. I haven’t cleaned my bathroom or bedroom or swept the floors to polished the granite. I’m leaving this mess and in fourteen days, I’ll return to it — assuming that my house-sitter: A) remembers she’s house-sitting and B) doesn’t burn the place down…

In about twenty minutes my aspirin will start to take effect and I’ll be on a city bus to retrieve Shirley from the fine folks at Scooterville. I’m excited to see Shirley again. I hope she’s missed me!

When her and I get home, I’m going to attempt to load the following gear on to her:
–Tent
–2.8 gallon fuel canister
–Sleeping bag
–Carry-on bag

I guess that’s it. That doesn’t seem so bad.

Okay, I’ve gotta run.

I’ll be sure to snag a picture of all the gear… And THEN we’ll go.

And so… it begins. Soon-ish.

We leave in under 10 hours. I have yet to pack.

But Sean is here now. We’re currently setting up the 3g streaming so you guys can all follow along. It should be up and rolling by 1pm tomorrow central time. Be sure to let people know about this so we can get the message out and hopefully increase the participation for next year.

We’ll also be launching the real time statistics page updating everyone on our mileage, cost of gas, and savings over other means of travel. In addition, please keep your eyes peeled for our blogs with loads of pictures and stories.

This should turn out to be a great scooter quest. At least this year, maybe I won’t be forced down the side of a mountain with no paved road. Or accosted on account of murderers. Or attacked by ducks and countless deer. Or….

Packed!

Holy cow! Just a little over 30-ish hours ’til departure!

I’m feeling rather accomplished at this moment. I’ve been up all night packing and I feel like I’m good to go.

I still need to find some quality beef jerky.

Any recommendations?

Sean’s almost near Minneapolis (I think, I haven’t actually heard from him since yesterday afternoon)… I’m picking up my scooter tomorrow. I’m getting my hair cut. Oh, this is gonna be groovy…

Well, I haven’t finished packing. In fact I haven’t even started. I should probably do that.

Tomorrow. After I eat at Saigon.

Packing…

Wow! We’re almost ready to go…

Here’s an update since my last freak out.

Currently, Shirley is at Scooterville getting a quick check-up with the addition of a front rack. (Side note, I just want to add that Bob, Jonathan, Steven, Dave, Nick and the rest are a bunch of amazing folks. They’ve taken great care of me over the past year and I’m so very thankful for all of them… I couldn’t do any of what I’m about to do without their help. Period. So thank you guys!)

Hopefully, any potential problems will be caught before we leave the state.

Things to do before we depart:
1) Mail my suit to New York for the wedding.
2) Buy a 1 gallon plastic gas container for fuel reserves.
3) Water my plants.
4) Make a copy of my keys for my house sitter.
5) Wash all my clothes.
6) Pack my clothes.
7) Buy some beef jerky.
Second coat of waterproofing for my tent.
9) Drive to my parent’s house to get my sleeping bag.
10) Clean my bathroom.
11) Get my hair cut.
12) Figure out a meager budget.
13) Have fun.

I think I can manage some of that…

Another note — after work on Monday, I got into my car and all my fears disappeared when on the radio Arcade Fire was playing Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels). That probably doesn’t mean much to anyone, but Dustin knows what it means. And let me assure you, it’s all good from here on out.

About this blog

It all started in 2007, with a friend driving from Minnesota to Utah to grab his scooter. Once Dustin Saunders reached Utah, he rode his scooter back to Minnesota with nothing but his friends and the will to drive it back against all odds. In 08' Dustin, Michael, and Sean embarked on a 3000+ mile trip unscathed. Ever since then, we travel in the name of adventure to the most epic places in America.
